Have you specified Zinc roofing or cladding in non-standard sizes and found it impossible to get a good price for its installation?
Do you work on small building projects and feel that metals like zinc and copper are out of reach because local contractors can’t source a small quantity?
Zinc roofing and cladding can be expensive, and not because it has a long service life, or because you’re paying for a beautiful, flexible architectural finish. The reason is supply.
Why is Zinc Roofing Expensive?
Obtaining Zinc for building projects has always been influenced by the supply of zinc sheeting, normally in 100kg coils. With a product costing thousands of pounds a tonne, a 100kg coil is expensive, and if you need 110kg for a project your contractor may end up having to buy 200kg.
Equally, if you’re looking for non-standard tray or panel sizes, or a small quantity for a bespoke extension roof, contractors may even refuse to price, because it simply wasn’t worth their while.
We’ve been aware of this issue for some time and being one of the largest material suppliers in the UK, we have worked with our partners to develop a supply chain based solution.
Instead of the material supply tail wagging the dog, architects, specifiers and contractors will be able to get the materials they want in the format that suits their project, installed at a reasonable cost.
Benefits of UK Zinc Fabrication
Fabricating zinc roofing and cladding in the UK to precise needs has benefits for all the supply chain:
Clients – don’t have to pay for zinc they don’t need, and can support UK industry at the same time;
Architects – can use zinc on their projects in the way they want more easily;
Roofing Contractors – can price for the product the client wants, and don’t have to hold expensive stock; and
Main Contractors – will find it easier to compete for contracts using zinc, with the savings UK fabrication delivers.
Zinc roofing costs more to specify because your contractor has to pay extra to get what you want, but not any more. Now you can get what you want, for a good price.

As a prospective self-builder, I can only say that a product which can be installed in days (important in wet and windy Wales) has a great advantage both in labour and equipment hire costs. I still have to convince the council planners that roofs don’t have to be made from concrete tiles.
We are designing and build a Sikh temple (Gurdwara) and would like more information about installing a Zinc flat roof on our project
I am considering using zinc as an external wall cladding. The are is 150m2, can you give me an idea of cost of materials and labour. The property is in a coastal area, approx 400m from the sea and 50m above sea level, are there any implications on the longevity of zinc in this type of location.
Hi
I am building a house in Orkney and there are some issues relating to spread of fire in building regs as boundary is only 1 metre away. I therefore have to have non combustible cladding. I am interested in zinc or copper (I believe it weathers down well) . We are 100m from the sea and are looking for approx 150m2
Could you give me advice on spec and cost
Thanks
Sam

I am doing a self build in N.I and had decided on a zinc, flat, warm roof. I was advised by my architect that this type of roof would not cost much more than a pitched, slate roof. However, some of the quotes I have been given, have been quite shocking, thus making me rethink my choice of roof. I’m not sure if this is due to fewer experienced installers/suppliers in N.I or greedy companies cashing in on this product since it has become so popular with architects. My project is a 150m2, single storey dwelling, 10 metres from the sea. I have been given conflicting opinions of the suitability of zinc in such a windy, coastal site. As you can see, my project is very modest, as is my budget. Is it possible, you could give me an idea of costs.

Hello, Try again! I am thinking whether it is at all feasible for us to replace a glass roofed lean-to conservatory roof. Partly 19th century but just a straight pent roof 8ft wide and 22 ft long with standing seam zinc – or any sort of zinc to stop it leaking. Has this any viability as an idea. Thank you

Hi,
We’re in the early stages of a self build / custom build and looking at different approaches to roof materials. We love the idea od zinc but are conscious of cost. Is there a recycled option or what are the closest alternative materials available?
