Two projects involving AccuRoof and its sister companies received Pitched Roofing Awards last week.
Both projects demonstrate the value specialist roofing teams can provide to projects, from design and detailing to supply and installation.
Copper Domed Roof at London Museum
The London Museum Poultry Market roof, a listed building, has been awarded ‘Best Use of Hard Metals’.
The Poultry Market forms part of the new London Museum (formerly Museum of London). The vast shell concrete dome roof at Smithfield was designed by Ove Arup and built in 1961-63.
Specialist roofing and cladding contractor Full Metal Jacket stripped the existing copper and screed roofing of the 70m by 40m shell roof down to the original concrete. They then rescreeded with lightweight screeds, reinsulated with non-combustible insulation and installed a brand new KME TECU Classic natural copper roof in a combination of standing seam and batten roll, all handmade by experienced coppersmiths. The KME TECU copper was supplied by SIG Hard Metals. Membranes for the project were supplied by SIG Roofing.
The new 33,000 m2 museum, designed by Stanton Williams with Asif Khan Ltd and with the external refurbishment by Julian Harrap Architects llp and Fraser Brown MacKenna Architects, is expected to complete in 2026.
Slate, Zinc and Hot Melt at Piccadilly Circus
The complex multi material roof at Lucent W1, behind the Piccadilly Lights, has been awarded ‘Best Use of a Heritage Building’. This is the second national award for the project’s roof. In May it received Best Multi-discipline Project over £250k at the national Roofing Awards.
The mixed-use development behind the Lights at Piccadilly Circus in London’s West End has one of the most complex roofs ever to be built in the capital across an almost complete city block. Designed by Fletcher Priest Architects, the project unified thirteen different buildings including several historic facades and the treatment of the new roof was integral to their design.
This project was a collaborative venture between AccuRoof, specialist roofing contractor E J Roberts and main contractor Wates Group. The complex roof was designed by AccuRoof to meet the architects design intent and comply with stringent environmental and safety requirements, including BREEAM Outstanding and the Gold WELL Building Standard.
The roof at Lucent W1 is executed using three different roofing systems: Planes of Cwt-y-bugail Natural Slate make up the bulk of the roof, elZinc Lava zinc provides flashings, gutters, balcony edges and cladding, and IKO Permatec Hot Melt inverted roof system is used for the flat roof areas, the 22 terraces and behind the iconic Lights.
All the roofing materials were supplied through SIG Roofing’s extensive supply chain, via its Kentish Town outlet and a separate holding area near the site.
