Every month our field technicians visit and inspect hundreds of roofing projects across the UK. They see some of the best examples of good practice, and we thought we’d give them the opportunity to share some of these with you. The criteria are simple. Share with us a photograph demonstrating either good practice or best looking finished roof.
April Winner: Cornwall Bungalow
Our April Best Roofing Photo of the Month winner is Jordon Hughes. He took this photograph of the replacement roof at a bungalow in Illogan, Cornwall.
The detached bungalow was built in 1960 and when it was bought for refurbishment at the end of last year, had a three-layer built up mineral felt roof. The new owner of the bungalow was refurbishing the entire building to sell on, and the roof is a significant visual element of the project, so needed to have ‘kerb appeal’.
AccuRoof were contacted about the project by DATAC registered contractor Asphaltic Cornwall’s Gary Fernie. SIG supplied the materials for the over cover and monitored the installation on site, and then carried out a final inspection for Warranty purposes.
Jordan explains:
“I attended the final inspection on this project in order to obtain a warranty. The membrane had been installed to a very high standard. Close inspection of the roof area confirmed that interfaces and penetrations all appeared to have been installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
“My opinion of this installation is that is has been installed to a high standed and with the added standing seams I was very impressed with the project. It is great to see good work like this bringing value to a property.”
Bungalow Roof Overlay
As the roof deck and insulation were in good condition they were repaired and the existing roof was used as a Vapour Control Layer, separated from the new membrane by 50mm of Recticel tissue faced insulation, bonded to the mineral felt with a high foaming PU adhesive.
The membrane you can see is a fully bonded Armouplan PSG membrane roof with standing seam profiles. The perimeter details were completed with Armourplan Membrane Coated Metal.
Armourplan PSG is a glass tissue reinforced polyester fleece backed PVC membrane which is often used on refurbishment projects like this, but also on new builds where an attractive finish is required. It forms a sleek skin which with the standing seam accessories provides an attractive and very cost effective alternative to a metal roof. Armourplan PSG offers enhanced mechanical properties over standard PVC membranes and is completely UV stable, enabling the completed inspected installation to attract a 20 year Warrantee.
Proof of the Pudding
A new roof really did help sell this bungalow. Contractor Gary Fernie commented:
“We were asked to look at the roof by the owner who had just bought the place to revamp and sell on, so the roof area had to look good because it was one of the first things you see when you enter the drive.
“The job all went very well overall. Because the roof is quite a low pitch we had to give some thought to the fascias, but the roof now makes the bungalow look so much better. Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating – it sold within the first week of being on the market!”
Technical Support Manager at AccuRoof Paul Jacobs adds:
“The project is a good example of how an old three-layer built up felt roof can be left in place to act as a VCL layer and a new warm roof system can be installed to improve the look of the building and extend its roof life for another 20 years. The standing seams are an excellent feature to catch the eye, they really bring the roof to life.”

It really does deserve to win. The aesthetics of the roofing system is exceptional. I would even want to have it installed o my home. Congratulations to the winner.
